We were called to a Mississauga home on August 31, 2026 with the system blocked end to end. Not leaves sitting in a trough. Maples, in a row, roots and all.
August 31, 2026: a trough with trees growing in it
Quick answer: A Mississauga home with the full eavestrough system blocked. Maple saplings had rooted along one run, which only happens after the leaf litter underneath has spent 2 or more seasons breaking down into soil. Underneath the green there was no water channel left at all.
Seeds land in every trough in this city, but they germinate only where there is somewhere for a root to go. That is the useful thing about a sapling: it dates the neglect. One season of leaves still looks like leaves. Soil deep enough to hold a maple upright takes longer.
The downspout that cannot be taken apart
Quick answer: This home has downspouts that discharge below ground rather than onto the lawn. The one beside the garage was blocked, and where it enters the ground it is set in concrete. There is no joint to open and no section to lift, so the 2 usual repairs both come off the table.
On most houses a blocked drop is a twenty minute job: open the joint, clear it, put it back. Here the pipe disappears into the ground and the collar is set in concrete. Underground drops are common on Mississauga builds of a certain age, and the City is direct about where roof water should end up. Its drainage guidance says "Roof downspouts should extend two metres away from your foundation and away from your neighbour's property", and reminds owners that "Property drainage is the responsibility of the landowner." A buried line that nobody can inspect is doing that job on trust.
Note the elbow above: split along the crimped seam. Water that cannot leave by the outlet leaves somewhere else.
What we offered, and what the homeowner chose
Quick answer: We gave 2 options. First, a rotating pressure washer nozzle fed down the pipe, which drives the packed debris out ahead of it. Second, if that failed, cut the downspout and run a new one that discharges onto the driveway instead of underground. The homeowner chose to try a wet vacuum himself first.
Option one: clear it in place. A rotating pressure washer nozzle goes down the pipe and pushes the blockage out ahead of it rather than compacting it. On a drop you cannot open, that is the only way to reach the middle.
Option two: stop using the underground line. Cut the downspout above grade and fit a new one discharging onto the driveway. Less tidy, and it ends the guessing.
He wanted to try a wet vacuum himself first, reasoning that soaked debris pulls out more easily. Fair enough. He calls us if it does not.
The damage was weight, not mess
Quick answer: Wet debris is heavy, and it hangs off the same spikes that hold the trough to the fascia. On this house the load had pulled the spikes part way out of their seats, so the run had lost its fall. A trough carrying 1 season of soaked leaves can weigh more than the fasteners were sized for.
A trough works because it falls towards the outlet, and that fall is held by spikes driven into the fascia. Load it with soaked debris for long enough and those fasteners work backwards out of the wood. When they move the trough becomes a level tray, or one that falls the wrong way, and clearing the debris does not put the fall back. That is why we look at the fascia line on every visit and not just at the mess.
What a level trough does over one winter
Quick answer: Without fall, water stands instead of draining. Across the 4 or 5 months of a GTA winter that standing water freezes and thaws over and over, and ice in the trough is where ice dams start. Natural Resources Canada describes melt water backing up behind that mass and getting under the shingles. Then debris settles in the same low spot and the cycle tightens.
No fall means standing water, and standing water in a Mississauga January means ice. Natural Resources Canada puts it plainly: "Ice dams are large masses of ice that collect typically on the lower edge of a roof and in the gutters", and "As melting snow (or rain) runs down the roof, it meets this ice mass and backs up, sometimes under the shingles and then leaking into the attic."
Debris follows water, so the blockage rebuilds in the same low spot every year. In heavy rain the trough overflows there and carries material into the downspout. That is how one bad corner blocks a whole system.
Federal guidance suggests one downspout per 6 to 12 metres of eavestrough. Overflow that keeps happening after a proper clean is a sizing or a slope problem, not a debris problem.
