Micro-Mesh Gutter Guard: 286-Foot Etobicoke Install

By Dmitriy Trubnik, Owner of DT Cleaning | April 2026

We installed 286 feet of micro-mesh gutter guard on a home in Etobicoke for $2,025 ($7 per foot). The job took our two-person crew four hours, including a full eavestrough cleaning, joint resealing, and slope correction. Three-year warranty included.

Key takeaways

  • 286 feet of micro-mesh gutter guard installed in 4 hours
  • $7.00 per linear foot, $2,025 total
  • Micro-mesh blocks walnut catkins, leaves, and husks year-round
  • Joint resealing and slope correction included at no extra cost
  • Pays for itself in under 3 years vs. regular cleaning visits

Two walnut trees stood less than ten feet from the roofline. Every spring the catkins dropped first, then the leaves through summer, then the nuts and husks in fall. Our client had been calling us three times a year to clean her entire eavestrough system. After the third visit in 2025, she asked the question we hear a lot: "Can you just install something so I never have to deal with this again?"

The problem: walnut trees and constant gutter clogs

Walnut trees are among the worst offenders for eavestrough systems in the GTA. Unlike maple leaves that sit flat and slide off with rain, walnut debris comes in three distinct forms. Sticky catkins in spring. Large compound leaves in summer. Hard-shelled nuts and husks in fall. Each type clogs gutters differently, and together they guarantee blockages year-round.

This home had 286 linear feet of aluminum eavestroughs wrapping the full perimeter. Three cleanings per year at standard rates added up fast. Over five years, she had spent more on gutter cleaning than the cost of a permanent fix.

Why we chose micro-mesh guards for this project

Not all gutter guards work the same way. Screen guards with larger holes would still let walnut catkins through. Foam inserts degrade in Canadian winters. Reverse-curve systems can fail when water volume spikes during heavy rainstorms.

For this Etobicoke home, we recommended a perforated aluminum micro-mesh gutter guard. The mesh openings are small enough to block catkins, seed pods, and shingle grit while still handling high water flow during spring thaws and summer storms.

The client specifically asked for a system where nothing would get through into the eavestrough. With walnut trees this close to the roof, micro-mesh was the only option we felt comfortable recommending.

"When walnut trees sit this close to the roofline, micro-mesh is the only guard type worth installing. Screen guards with bigger holes still let the catkins through, and foam inserts fall apart after a couple of Canadian winters."

The installation process

Our two-person crew finished the full 286 feet in four hours.

Before touching any guard panels, we cleaned the entire eavestrough system. Packed debris out of every section, downspouts flushed, full inspection for damage. We found several joints where the original sealant had cracked or pulled away, so we stripped the old silicone and resealed every one of them at no extra charge. Leaking joints under gutter guards cause fascia rot that homeowners never notice until the damage gets serious. We always fix these before covering anything up.

Two sections along the back of the house had standing water. The slope was off. We adjusted the hangers to get the water moving toward the downspouts again. Pooling water in eavestroughs speeds up corrosion and in summer it breeds mosquitoes.

Then the guards themselves. We cut each micro-mesh panel to fit the exact eavestrough profile, tucked them under the first row of shingles, and fastened the outer edge to the lip. Corners, end caps, downspout openings all got custom-fitted sections. After everything was secured, we ran a garden hose through the full system to confirm drainage at every downspout. No pooling, no overflow, no leaks.

Cost breakdown

This project cost $2,025 total:

Item Detail
Total footage 286 linear feet
Price per foot $7.00 CAD
Total cost $2,025 CAD
Includes Guards, hardware, silicone resealing, slope adjustment, full system cleaning
Warranty 3 years (materials + workmanship)

Three professional gutter cleanings per year in Etobicoke run between $450 and $750 annually, depending on the home's size and access difficulty. This installation pays for itself in under three years of avoided cleaning costs.

What the client got

After four hours, the client had micro-mesh coverage on all 286 feet, resealed joints throughout the system, corrected drainage slopes, and a three-year warranty. She no longer needs to schedule three cleaning visits per year.

The walnut trees are still there. The difference is that now the catkins, leaves, and husks sit on top of the mesh and blow off or wash away with rain. The eavestroughs underneath stay clean.

Gutter guard options we install in Etobicoke

We install several types of gutter protection depending on the roof, the trees, and the budget:

  • Micro-mesh guards for homes near walnut, oak, or pine trees where fine debris is the main problem
  • Perforated aluminum guards for standard leaf protection on most GTA homes
  • VEVOR stainless steel guards as a solid mid-range option
  • Alu-Rex T-Rex guards for heavy-duty commercial or multi-story residential work
  • LeafFilter-style micro-mesh for homeowners who want the finest filtration available

A home with one maple tree nearby does not need the same guard as a house surrounded by walnut and pine. We look at the trees first, then recommend. See our 405-foot gutter guard project on another Etobicoke home for comparison.

When gutter guards make financial sense

Gutter guards are not always worth the money. If your property has no overhanging trees and light debris, an annual cleaning is cheaper. But if any of the following apply, guards will save you money over time:

  • You clean your gutters two or more times per year
  • Large trees overhang or sit within 15 feet of your roofline
  • You have had ice dam problems in winter
  • Your fascia shows signs of water damage from overflowing gutters

At $7 per linear foot, most Etobicoke homes with 150 to 300 feet of eavestrough can be fully protected for $1,050 to $2,100.

Frequently asked questions

How long does gutter guard installation take?

Most residential installations take three to five hours, depending on the total footage and roof access. This 286-foot project took four hours.

Do gutter guards work in Canadian winters?

Yes. Micro-mesh guards actually reduce ice dam formation by keeping debris out of the eavestrough. Debris is what traps water and creates the conditions for ice buildup. We install guards year-round, though spring and fall are the busiest seasons.

How much do gutter guards cost in Etobicoke?

Our pricing starts at $7 per linear foot installed, including guards, hardware, cleaning, and sealing. A typical Etobicoke home costs between $1,050 and $2,100 for full perimeter coverage.

Will I never need to clean my gutters again?

With micro-mesh guards, most homeowners never need another cleaning. If you have extremely heavy pine needle coverage, a light brush-off of the guard surface every few years might help. But you will not be scooping wet debris out of your gutters three times a year anymore.

What warranty do you offer on gutter guard installation?

Three years, covering both the guard materials and our workmanship. If a sealed joint fails or a panel comes loose within that period, we come back and fix it.

Can micro-mesh guards handle heavy rain?

Yes. We test every installation with a garden hose after finishing. Micro-mesh panels handle high water volume during spring thaws and summer downpours. The mesh sits at an angle that lets water sheet through while debris slides off the top.

Do you install gutter guards in winter?

We install year-round. Winter installations work fine as long as the roof is safe to access. The aluminum panels and fasteners are not temperature-sensitive. Spring and fall are our busiest seasons because homeowners notice gutter problems when leaves fall or snow melts.

What is the difference between micro-mesh and standard aluminum guards?

Standard perforated aluminum guards have larger holes that block leaves but let smaller debris through -- pine needles, seed pods, walnut catkins. Micro-mesh guards have much finer openings that block nearly everything. Micro-mesh costs slightly more per foot, but for homes near walnut, pine, or oak trees the extra filtration is worth it.

How long do micro-mesh gutter guards last?

Aluminum micro-mesh guards typically last 15 to 20 years before they need replacement. The mesh itself does not corrode or degrade in Canadian weather. The most common failure point is the fasteners or sealant at the edges, which is why we include a three-year warranty on both materials and workmanship. After that, the guards generally continue working without any maintenance.
