DT Cleaning van and yard sign in front of a large North York home for gutter cleaning service

Blocked Gutters in North York and Heritage Windows Downtown

Two calls on the same day. One from North York, one from downtown Toronto. Both wanted us out the same week.

The first job was gutter cleaning on a large two-storey home where pine cones had packed every single downspout. The second was window cleaning on a century-old brick row house with arched stained glass panels that one wrong move could destroy.

Here is what each job looked like and what we found.

Gutter Cleaning in North York: Every Downspout Was Blocked

The homeowner called for two things: a full eavestrough cleaning and a pressure washing estimate. When our crew arrived, the problem was obvious from the ground. A tall pine tree sits right next to the house, and its cones and needles had been falling into the gutters for at least a year.

Once we got on the roof, we found every single downspout completely packed. Not just leaves. Pine cones, pine needles, and compacted organic debris had formed solid plugs in the elbows. Water had nowhere to go.

We cleared the entire system by hand and flushed each downspout with water to confirm flow. The eavestroughs had clearly been neglected for a while, but the roof itself was in fair shape.

What We Found During the Pressure Washing Estimate

While inspecting the facade for the pressure washing quote, we found damage on the front of the house. Stone and stucco deterioration caused by water that had been running behind the siding. This was not a cleaning problem. The roof edge was not properly flashed, and water had been seeping into the wall for a long time.

We told the homeowner straight: you need a roofer, not a pressure washer. Cleaning the facade without fixing the source would just be a waste of money. We gave him our honest recommendation and moved on to the next job.

Heritage Window Cleaning in Downtown Toronto

This one came in through Instagram. A homeowner in one of Toronto's older neighborhoods had a three-storey Victorian row house with windows that had not been cleaned in a while.

The first thing you notice on these houses is the arched decorative windows with stained glass panels above the main windows. You cannot use standard cleaning techniques on glass that is over a hundred years old. Pressure will crack it. Rough pads will scratch it. Every panel needs careful hand-cleaning with soft tools and zero pressure.

Working Behind the Screens

Each room had four sliding window panels. To clean behind the screens properly, our crew had to go room by room, remove each screen, pull each slider out of the track, clean the glass on both sides, wipe down the frame, and reassemble. Four panels per room across three floors.

The backyard was another challenge. There was no space to set up a 40-foot extension ladder, so our team worked with a shorter ladder from tight angles. The front was more straightforward. The big ladder went up, the blue pads protected the sill, and we worked top to bottom.

What These Two Jobs Have in Common

Both calls were from homeowners who waited a bit too long. The North York gutters had at least a full year of buildup. The downtown windows had enough grime that you could not tell if the glass was tinted or just dirty.

Spring is when most homeowners in Toronto notice these things. The snow melts, the rain starts, and suddenly you see the mess that winter left behind. Gutters overflow during the first real downpour. Windows look foggy when the sun finally comes through.

Key Takeaways

  • Pine trees near your house mean gutter cleanings at least twice a year
  • Old heritage windows need hand-cleaning with soft tools, never pressure
  • If your facade is damaged, fix the roof first, then clean the walls
  • Spring is the best time to address winter damage to gutters and windows
  • Ask your window cleaner to inspect downspout flow while on the ladder

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean my gutters if I have pine trees nearby?
At least twice a year, in late spring and late fall. Pine trees shed needles and cones year-round, which means your eavestroughs fill up faster than homes without conifers. Many North York homeowners with mature pines book quarterly cleanings to avoid blocked downspouts.
How much does gutter cleaning cost in Toronto?
Most residential gutter cleanings in Toronto range from $150 to $350, depending on home size and the number of storeys. Homes with heavy tree coverage or fully blocked downspouts may cost more due to the extra time needed to clear compacted debris.
Can you clean stained glass windows?
Yes, but stained glass requires hand-cleaning with soft microfiber pads and no pressure. Our crew never uses squeegees or abrasive tools on antique glass. Each panel is cleaned individually at a slow, controlled pace to prevent damage.
How do I know if my downspouts are blocked?
Run a garden hose into the gutter opening above each downspout. If water backs up instead of flowing through, the downspout is blocked. You might also notice water spilling over the gutter edge during rain, which usually means a clog somewhere in the system.
Is pressure washing safe for stucco or stone facades?
It depends on the condition of the surface. If the stucco is cracking, flaking, or separating from the wall, pressure washing can make it worse. Always have a professional assess the surface first. In the North York job above, we recommended the homeowner fix the roof flashing before any cleaning.
Do I need to be home during window cleaning?
Not for exterior-only cleaning. For interior work, someone should be home since our crew needs to access each room to remove screens and clean sliding panels from both sides. We confirm timing when we book your appointment.
What is the difference between a gutter and an eavestrough?
They are the same thing. "Gutter" is the more common term across North America, while "eavestrough" is the standard Canadian English term. In Toronto, you will hear both used interchangeably by homeowners and contractors.
Can I clean heritage windows myself?
You can clean the interior side at ground level. For upper floors and exterior panels, we strongly recommend hiring a professional. Heritage windows are often single-pane and very fragile. The cost of replacing a stained glass panel far exceeds the cost of a professional cleaning.
When is the best time to schedule spring gutter cleaning?
Late April through mid-May is ideal in the GTA. By that point, most trees have dropped their spring pollen and seed pods, but summer storms have not started yet. Booking early in the season gives you the best scheduling flexibility.
